PROJECTS : Refugee Colony Development

There have already been two phases of refugee colony development projects. KMDA is now implementing the third phase of the project called Infrastructure Development of Displaced Persons Colonies in KMA. The nature of intervention in terms of provision of infrastructure facilities has been more or less the same as that for slum improvement. Whereas the earlier projects were confined to recognised refugee colonies located on public lands, the third phase addresses to such refugee colonies, which were not taken up for development in the earlier phases. While the fund for the earlier phases had come from the Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation Department of Government of West Bengal, the third phase is funded by Government of India.

The phase - III project includes 324 group squatters and private colonies. The package of infrastructure development includes water supply, drainage, sanitary, latrines, roads and pathways and protective works to road embankment. It may be noted that identification and prioritisation of development works are done in consultation with the Colony Committees to ensure participation of beneficiaries in the planning process.

But so far, KMDA has been assigned 174 colonies distributed all over KMA, at an estimated sanctioned cost of Rs 33.95 crore. Work has been physically completed in about 88 colonies. Work is in progress in 64 colonies and work in the remaining 22 will commence soon.
